As a mom to 2 littles 2 and under at the time of writing this, and a business mentor who works with other mompreneurs, I get it. I get how hard it is to juggle freelancing or running an online business with motherhood. I’m right there in the weeds of sleepless nights with you, trying to make things work. One of the things that I’ve seen work for so many in our situation is VIP days for mompreneurs.
Why? The short answer is that a service like a VIP day is intense and has strict boundaries, which makes it easier for those balancing busy lives to contain and juggle both.
In this blog post, I’ll give you the long answer of why you need to add a VIP Day to your services suite if you’re a mompreneur, along with the following:
I previously wrote about How to Use VIP Days to Scale Your Freelance Business. This post will get more specific for those who are working moms.
A VIP Day is an intensive freelancer day rate that clients can book if you offer services like copywriting, design, or something similar. They’re different from charging hourly because the “VIP day” often includes pre and post day reservation work, all charged for a single flat rate. Often, this is at a premium fee because freelancer day rates or VIP days are a premium service.
You can learn more about what a VIP day is and how you can use a freelancer day rate to scale your business in general here.
I share more about what a VIP day is in this video.
What could a VIP day look like for your business as a mompreneur or freelance? The good news is that you have options. And like anything in your business, you get to call the shots. You get to decide what boundaries you want to have in place, and you get to change the structure to fit whatever season you’re in.
Some clients I’ve worked with have chosen to use VIP weeks, or intensive week reservations versus keeping their intensive reservations to a single day. Some may do 2 weeks even. Or just 2 days that’s spaced over the course of a week.
I prefer to keep my VIP days to a single day. The strict boundaries help me with capacity planning, focusing on the day itself, and holding myself to the boundaries as well as clients.
Okay, I’m definitely biased. But there are so many pros to adding a VIP Day to your freelance business if you’re a mompreneur! I could talk about these for hours. Here’s just a few of those positives I’ve experienced for myself, and my clients have noticed as well since adding VIP Days to their offer suite.
First, we’re busy. And my guess is that you need to coordinate childcare. Unless you’re lucky enough to have family support, you’re likely paying per hour for childcare, so your work time needs to be worth it. Beyond the expense of childcare, the time away from your kids needs to be worth it! With a freelancer day rate, you can make the most of your time and keep your work hours contained.
Because of the intense container, VIP Days are easy to schedule. After deciding the workflow and inclusions, you know exactly how much time you have in your calendar. For example, if you book 1 VIP day each week, or about 3-4 each month, you’ll know exactly what days you need childcare for and for how long. This makes it easy for you to book your services far in advance. And we love booking up months ahead of time! That feels like the biggest win when you’re a freelancer.
With a VIP Day structure, your clients will get results, fast. The intense timeframe is often helpful to fit into their larger project timelines. For example, if you’re a freelance copywriter, you could offer a day rate to optimize website copy. They can then line up your VIP day with their timeline with their website designer, so everyone is happy. This is part of what makes a VIP Day a premium service.
There’s a certain kind of confidence that comes with adding a VIP Day to your business as a mompreneur. Your time is valuable. Hard stop. That becomes even more clear when you start charging premium rates for a freelancer day rate or VIP Day. A freelancer day rate is worth the premium rate because my guess is you’re able to bring a lot of value within the deliverables, even if you only spend a day on the work. When I think of the monetary value my clients see in return for booking an intensive day with me, whether that’s to build out a new funnel strategy or optimize existing copy… The fees are more than worth it.
As much as I love suggesting that mompreneur freelancers add a VIP Day or freelancer day rate to their services suite, I know this intensive offer isn’t for everyone. So what are the cons? We need to be realistic, of course!
The biggest concern I hear about adding a VIP Day to your freelance business as a Mompreneur is the unpredictability of your schedule. If you’re having a bad day, you still need to follow through. Unless of course you have amazing clients who don’t mind if you reschedule for a day or two later, you often still need to get up and do the work as booked. Plus you probably don’t want to have to reschedule if the kids kept you up all night. You just want to do your job well.
As a Mompreneur, you’re probably working with a lower charge in your battery than before you had kids. VIP Days can feel intense, which might not be your preferred working conditions now that you’re juggling both work with motherhood.
Personally, I like the intense structure. I get out of Mom Mode and back into my business hat, excited to help clients make more sales. But I’ll admit I’m always drained after a VIP Day booking. Because I know to expect this now, I keep my other to-dos minimal for a booked day.
I share more about my overall VIP Day process in this blog post. I highly recommend you read that post as well if you’re considering adding a similar service to your offer suite. The specifics that are relevant to other Mompreneurs looking to add a freelancer day rate to their offer suite are these details:
You can learn more about my VIP Day structure here, but these are the specifics relevant to other working moms.
Not all of my clients are moms, but many are. It just has happened that I’ve attracted a community of working mothers, or soon-to-be and wish-to-be mompreneurs. Many of them have added a VIP Day or freelancer day rate to their services suite. It’s a good alternative to building a team, and team growth isn’t a goal for everyone!
Shocking, I know… My advice isn’t always that you need to hire a team. Yes, sometimes you need to outsource. Yes, sometimes it’s time to hire. However, I don’t think it’s the first and only thing you can do to scale your freelance business.
Sometimes it makes more sense to refine your services suite and systems to thrive as a solopreneur. Working moms don’t always have time or capacity to manage teams. However, clocking in for an intensive freelancer day rate or VIP day with strict boundaries may feel more manageable as a mompreneur.
Hopefully the information here is helpful in your decision making process. But ultimately, only you can decide if you should add a VIP Day to your offer suite. The most important thing to remember is that you can experiment with adding a VIP Day or freelancer day rate to your business, and you can change things. You don’t need to lock things in forever. That’s the reason why you started freelancing in the first place, right? For the freedom and control over your life.
Becoming a booked and busy freelancer or copywriter requires constant work. You need to be dedicated in order to be successful in a world like this. Don’t let that scare you though!
Often, freelancers get started because they like the work, but don’t necessarily like the business side of things.
