Don’t let your website (or lack thereof) hold you back from growing your freelance or service-based business. A lot of newbies get stuck at this stage. And a lot of not-so-newbies, but not yet Big Wigs get stuck here too. Websites are a huge pain for a lot of online business owners. At some point, you might be faced with the decision: Do I use a website copy template? Or hire someone to write custom copy for me?
You’re ready for big, beautiful, and something that clearly communicates the value of what you offer… But you get stuck on the follow-through. Maybe you can’t actually invest in custom everything yet, so you don’t know where to start DIYing. Or maybe you can invest a little bit, but you don’t know which part of your website would be the best place to start.
Good news: You’ve got options no matter where you are in business.
Your website shouldn’t be the thing that’s holding you back from growing. If you’re DIYing and don’t know what to actually write on your website, a website copy template might be the right option for you. A good website copy template will essentially give you a wireframe or a map of what to say where on your website. All you have to do is plug in your own words following those guidelines… No more guessing!
There’s also plenty of great website design templates available online through your hosting platform. Squarespace and Showit, for example, have an entire library of templates to choose from.
So in the beginning DIY stage of business, it’s totally a good idea if you use templates to put together your website copy and the design. You can always grow and improve from there, but you’ll at least have something up FAST. And if you choose to purchase website templates from those who you know are true experts, then you can bet your website will work for you too.
Website copy templates are exactly how they sound—a Mad Libs style option for writing your website copy. I offer website copy templates in The Biz Bar that are super easy to use and follow along with. They’re wireframed too, which means that they tell you where to put the words. Not just what to say.
My website copy templates include all the core pages you could possibly need as a freelancer or service provider, including multiple variations of each. And there’s how-to videos for each type of page, giving you actionable advice about how to best use the templates.
With a full website copy template, you should have all everything you need to write your website without the stress. You still have to write the copy to sound like you, but that’s a lot easier with a plug-in guide to follow.
I almost always suggest waiting until your business is making some money before investing in custom copywriting. Personally, I don’t work with any new businesses in the done-for-you studio anymore. Your offers need to be proven to meet the requirements of working together in that capacity.
However, I do help new business owners write or optimize their website copy in a single day intensive format. This is never writing from scratch, but is a good middle ground if you’re new in business and don’t have proven offers, but really don’t want to or can’t write your copy on your own.
The best option when you’re new to business really is writing your own website copy, but with help. Things always change a lot in your first year of business, so there’s no point investing in custom just to have to redo it all again next year. That’s why I created the Plug-In Website Copy Template Library. To help you learn how to get a basic website up ASAP that you can grow from. When your business is a bit more consistent, you’ll be ready for more.
There’s a long and a short answer for this question… The short answer is that every time your business experiences major growth, or a big level up, you’re going to want fresh copy.
The long answer: I say “want” fresh copy because you’ll likely actually want to update it because something feels misaligned. Often through big seasons of growth, the entire business and brand needs a refresh to keep up with the level of service you provide now.
Ideally, if you work with a copywriter who writes custom copy for your website, they work with longevity in mind. When writing copy for clients, I always make sure that we think with their long-game in mind. We want the big promise to remain the same, and allow features or specific offers to change as needed.
This is also why I typically recommend that newer businesses start with website copy templates, or learning how to write their website copy themselves. Because the early stages of business often come with accelerated growth, lots of changes, etc… You will want the freedom and know-how of the basics to update your copy on your own. Once the business is established, it makes more sense to invest in custom support.
If you Google “website copy templates” you might be presented with a ton of options, both paid and free. From my experience, you get what you pay for. That’s the first way to weed out the good from the bad! Those who offer free templates are often giving just part of the copy you will need in exchange for your email. This is a (proven and legitimate) marketing tactic to grow their email list and sell you something later. There’s nothing wrong with people doing this (I have lead magnets too!). The point is that you’ll receive a more robust website copy template pack if you purchase one versus choosing a free option.
Otherwise, the best way to choose who’s website copy templates to purchase is by finding a copywriter who’s style you resonate with. If you like their style and the custom websites they create for clients, then you’ll likely appreciate their templates and attached suggestions.
If you’re still aligned with the DIY website copy option, you should definitely check out the Plug-In Website Copy Template Library. With the help of these easy-to-use website copy templates, I bet you could get fresh copy live on your website by tomorrow.
